  Who Am I

Are you planning to visit the east coast of Canada this year? Do you have specific interests in mind or simply looking for information on Cape Breton Island? Maybe I can help.

My name is Peter Stienstra and I live here in Sydney, Nova Scotia. I lived abroad for several years and travelled extensively but I found, as many of us Capers do, that Rita says it best, "Home is where the heart is."

I returned back to the island in 1991, and primarily worked in the transport and tourism industry since. My interests in the island grew and I became increasingly fascinated with the natural ecology and biodiversity found here in Cape Breton and found it to be well presented in the Cape Breton University's biology curriculum. This island continues to fascinate me and throughout the years many visitors I've guided throughout the island have commented that if they knew what to expect, they would have included several more days.

Gettin' Here

With the high cost of airfare from Sydney to Halifax many visitors will arrange ground transport from Halifax International Airport and drive to Cape Breton Island. In addition to saving hundreds on the airfare visitors traveling by vehicle find the drive picturesque and relaxing. Keep in mind though; the drive, depending on your destination on the island, can take anywhere from three to five hours.
Alternatives to renting a vehicle at the airport: Prearranged hired personal transport that are offered through local touring operators and travel agencies. The Acadian Lines Bus Company has daily scheduled runs from Halifax to Sydney and includes the airport along its route. In addition, there are other, smaller shuttle services (ie, 7-passenger vans) that will pick you up at the airport and shuttle you to the Island permitting room on board, most are listed in the yellow pages with the bus companies. And as a last resort, the taxis assigned to the airport frequently transport visitors to various destinations throughout Nova Scotia.

Flying to Sydney

Arriving by air to Cape Breton you may require ground transport to and from the Sydney Airport. Many of the island’s resorts and lodges are several hours drive from Sydney. Your immediate options for transport at the airport include car rental agencies and a contracted taxi company that provides a shuttle service for all incoming flights. Larger busing and shuttle services provide scheduled runs between Sydney and Halifax but do not, that I’m aware of, provide transport to destinations located in the western or northern areas of the island, nor pick-up at the airport.

Cape Breton has something for everyone and my purpose here is perhaps give you an idea of what to do or see from someone familiar with the area. This island is appealing to many interests, for example: families traveling here opt for the island’s popular recreational and leisure areas and activities such as our beaches, whale watching tours, festivals, and numerous hiking and camping trails. Couples focus on the scenic trails and the Highlands National Park, all boasting an endless array of breathe-taking, romantic landscapes and vistas; and perhaps still find time to browse quaint gift shops along the way. Others still have specific interests to tour historical sites such as the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, the Fortress of Louisbourg, the Highland Village in Iona, or the Glace Bay Miners Museum, to name a few. Golf enthusiasts can arrange a travel package focusing on Cape Breton’s “Fab Four” golf courses. Naturalists may prefer a tour highlighting the island’s diverse and abundant avian community, flora, or wildlife both terrestrial and marine. Scuba enthusiasts should take advantage of the island’s countless shipwrecks and diverse aquatic ecosystems.
